Louise Truslow

Originally from England, Louise Truslow has been based in Thailand since 1990. This move to South East Asia and the sights and experiences she gained from travels in the area, lead her to take up painting in 1995.

Louise is a strong communicator who meticulously researches and studies her subject before presenting the finished work. To Louise painting has not only been a creative release, but it has also proved to be a vehicle for sharing her fascination with the world around her.

She states:
“I see painting as both a detailed study of the treasures, history and natural richness of South East Asia, and also as a way of communicating and sharing the enthusiasm I have for these things with others”.

Thailand and the surrounding countries have offered a wealth of material for Louise to explore. Her study of temples and Buddha images, extensively researched in Ayutthya and Phnom Penh, provided reference material for several series of paintings. Vivid street scenes and the market umbrellas of Chiang Mai have provided inspiration for exhibitions; as have the bustle of cities, village scenes and the landscapes of the countryside.

Louise has explored different techniques and media in her growth and evolution as an artist. Her watercolour style is loose in its application of paint, whilst being strong in compositional line. Louise’s watercolours are rendered with a light touch which brings out the natural vitality and luminescence of the subjects. Louise is particularly successful in her use of the negative space in her paintings and utilizes the blank canvas to great effect. In her oil paintings Louise pays careful attention to the play of light on her subjects and employs strong contrast in her colours to achieve this. Her recent work explores the themes of movement and light in a series of oil paintings focusing on subjects as varied as dancers and koi carp.

Louise has exhibited annually in Bangkok since 1997 and has had over 12 solo exhibitions. She has been a permanent exhibitor at La Luna Gallery, Chiang Mai, since it’s opening in 2004. Her exhibitions have attracted great public interest and wide critical acclaim and her work is held in private and corporate collections in many countries around the world.

Through sales and auctions of her paintings Louise supports a wide variety of charities in Thailand and South East Asia. The Gala Reception for her 2007 exhibition – “Vivace” - will raise money for children's charities in both Thailand and Cambodia.

Louise Truslow has gained much recognition for her body of work and is considered one of the leading expatriate artists working in Bangkok today. “Vivace” promises to be the latest in a line of exciting offerings.
