Karen mother and children. The Karen are by far the largest tribal group in Thailand. Their villages are found in the north from Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son and all the way down the western border. The two main groups are Sgaew and Pwo and number more than 250,000 altogether.

The Kayah in Thailand live in very small numbers in northern Mae Hong Son. Their language and culture appear to be distinct but they are considered part of the Karenic ethnic group. They famous for their kindness towards travellers from any culture or race.
